Foundational Yoga Teacher Training: A 200+ Hour Yoga Teacher Training

  • The Portland Yoga Project 129 Newbury Street Portland, Maine, 04101 United States (map)

Take your next step with confidence.

Our Foundational Yoga Teacher Training is based on a model of understanding that teaching yoga is a craft that requires deep knowledge, acute attention, interpersonal skills, and creativity.

This training takes the industry standard model of a 200 hour yoga teacher training and expands that model to include elements that are essential to becoming a yoga teacher: small group mentorship with expert facilitators, and practice teaching to students in the real world. You will receive not only the basic knowledge and practical skills to teach, but also the guidance and tools necessary to develop your voice, clarify your values, and complete the program with the confidence you need to start your career.

This training fosters curiosity, expertise, holistic comprehension, and the space to develop your voice and deepen your personal growth under expert guidance and personal attention so that as you learn to teach yoga you will also deepen your understanding of yourself and of your role in the world.

Upon completion of this training you will:

  • Have completed 216 contact hours with highly skilled staff and over 45 hours of non-contact self guided study

  • Be able to confidently teach a mixed level class that exceeds the industry standards of safety, creativity, and competency, and puts you in a position to develop your career as a teacher in a way that aligns with your personal goals

  • Be equipped with the skills to teach a class in both vinyasa flow style (linking breath and movement) and hatha style (slower paced and longer holds)

  • Have the knowledge of both the gross skills (anatomy and physiology, movement science, alignment) and subtle body (energetic fields and inner work), and the tools to apply that knowledge in the context of teaching a yoga class

  • Have a fundamental understanding of ancient yogic philosophies and texts through the lens of how these texts and philosophies can be applied toward social justice and community leadership

CURRICULUM topics and hours

The practice of yoga is vast, esoteric, and ancient. This training balances a deep honor of that vastness with the focused goal of equipping people to teach an effective postural asana class that integrates breath work, meditation, and the philosophical tenets of yoga. Every inquiry into the complexity of the philosophy that grounds this practice will be met with the necessary skills of what it looks like to apply those philosophies in the context of a contemporary yoga class. This training is not just about gaining the skills to teach a yoga class, but learning how to be a yoga teacher in the midst of your own life and in the current context of the world.
