MEA STARR TAVARES

QUEER & TRANS AHIMSA

Mea (they/them) yokes together their living practice of yoga with decades of Queer and Trans advocacy to bring Queer and Trans Ahimsa to PYP’s Foundational YTT. Through the liberatory languages of yoga, bodywork (Craniosacral Therapy, Polarity Therapy & Traditional Japanese Reiki) and Queer & Trans education they strive to be in service to the shared root of these practices: the alive remembering of the inherent holiness of the self, the body and of all expressions of life.

A lifelong student of the subtle, Mea began their training in meditation and subtle bodywork in 1996 at the age of 12. In their own early inquiries into the nature of “self”, explorations of Transness and mysticism were two sides of the same hand.

Applications of their commitment to Queer and Trans education range from serving on panels and lecturing in formal establishments both local and national, to crafting practices that softly hold space for expressions of gender and sexuality that are as unique as the bodies that hold them.

Mea revels in resting the offerings of their yoga practice in the Pratyahara limb, through the practice of Yoga Nidra. Here they weave together their languages of classical anatomy and subtle bodywork with the tending of our collective capacity to dream remembered sacredness from a place of deep rest.

It is a joy to hold their passions together in one form at the Portland Yoga Project; a studio that lives their yoga in a kind of alignment that is both deeply instructive and soft with belonging.
