What are 3 words that best describe your classes?

Nerdy (Love that anatomy!), grounded (in the history and philosophy of the practice), and exploratory (What does this look like in your body? What happens when you do this? Are you breathing? Do you need to take śavāsana for an hour?).

Any other fun/weird/important fact/obsession/hobby?

I grow hot peppers and make hot sauce through my fledgling farm, Farthest Field Farm. I am obsessed with all things clawhammer banjo and dream of playing for contra dances some day. When I dance is when I feel the most deeply connected to something greater than myself.

Alyssa Adkins (she/they)

Alyssa is an enthusiastic creator of warm, inviting spaces.  She puts a lot of energy into fostering environments where it’s OK not to know, and very welcome to ask questions, explore, and maybe crack a smile at oneself.

What are her classes like?  Well, you know when you’re trying to figure out a favorite pose (or dance move, or banjo lick, or [insert favorite analogy here]) and you get a revelatory, foundational tip and then wonder where that tip had been your whole life?  Alyssa creates challenging and satisfying classes that look at poses from their building blocks, hopefully providing some of that revelatory insight to help you engage with a pose the way your body wants to.  She emphasizes steady practice of foundations over time so you can skillfully get where you want to go with a focus on safety, empowerment, and joy in the learning.

Most importantly, Alyssa acknowledges the colonialist and supremacist waters we swim in, and is dedicated to her own internal work as well as ongoing study of yoga’s history, philosophy and evolution.  You’ll hear and experience this focus in her classes through little seeds of history and philosophy, and grounding of the work in the vast history of yoga and how we might practice respectfully and ethically.
