WHO IS THIS TRAINING FOR?
-
Teaching yoga can look like many different things! Maybe you want to build a career as a full time or part time teacher, or you want to teach to family and friends, or to your colleagues or clients in another profession. We would love to hear about how you hope to integrate teaching yoga into your future.
-
We understand that practice ebbs flows. If you’ve had a consistent practice in the past, but less consistent recently, we’d love to hear about your experience and how you’d like to recommit to your practice ahead of and during this training.
-
The bulk of this training will take place in a large group setting, with opportunities to work in smaller groups for practice teaching and discussion. All participants are expected to contribute to group learning by bringing your questions and perspectives with a commitment to listening to and honoring the questions and perspectives of others. We take mutual respect very seriously. Our staff is skilled at holding multiple perspectives with grace, and we expect all of our participants to do the same. We seek to decenter without disregarding the impact of white supremacy, heteronormativity, ableism, and cisgendered experiences.
-
In addition to the expectation that you will be present for the entirety of all our shared time together*, you will be expected to attend at least one yoga class per week (ideally at PYP, though it may be elsewhere), to reflect and journal about your experience, to complete occasional homework and reading assignments, and to be flexible enough to observe classes, and to schedule meetings and zoom calls with your mentorship cohort (for a total of 18 hours over the course of the 6 months).
WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT
At The Portland Yoga Project, we believe Teacher Training is about more than learning to teach yoga—it's an opportunity to deepen your practice, expand your understanding, and grow alongside a community of fellow trainees and facilitators.
We are committed to creating a learning environment that is rigorous, supportive, inclusive, and rooted in curiosity, accountability, and care. Clear expectations help us build that environment together.
The information below provides an overview of what you can expect from our Teacher Training programs and what we'll ask of participants. All enrolled trainees will receive and be asked to review and sign a Teacher Training Enrollment Agreement prior to the start of the program.
Attendance & Graduation
Our Teacher Training is intentionally designed as a progressive learning experience, with each session building upon the last. Consistent attendance and active participation are an important part of both your learning and the learning of your cohort.
Participants are expected to attend all scheduled sessions, arrive on time, actively engage in discussions and practices, and complete all required coursework.
For the Foundational Yoga Teacher training, participants may miss up to one training weekend (15 hours), however, these hours will require approved make up work, and one-on-one time with facilitators based on the material that was missed, which may be subject to additional cost to participants.
Successful completion of the program includes attendance, participation, completion of assignments and practice teaching, and fulfillment of all graduation requirements.
Tuition & Enrollment
Enrolling in Teacher Training is a meaningful commitment for both participants and Portland Yoga Project. We encourage prospective trainees to review our payment and cancellation policies before enrolling.
Deposits are non-refundable once accepted into the program. Tuition payments and payment plans are non-refundable except where required by law. If The Portland Yoga Project must cancel a training before it begins, participants may choose to receive a refund or transfer their tuition to a future training.
Our Learning Community
We believe people learn best when they feel respected, supported, challenged, and cared for.
We ask all participants to contribute to a learning environment rooted in curiosity, accountability, kindness, and mutual respect. Throughout the program, participants are expected to follow The Portland Yoga Project's Studio Policies and to help cultivate a community where everyone feels welcome, supported, and able to learn.
Creating a Safe Learning Environment
Teacher Training includes personal reflection, practice teaching, feedback, and meaningful conversation. We ask participants to help create an environment where everyone feels safe to learn by honoring confidentiality, respecting personal boundaries, communicating thoughtfully, and treating one another with dignity and respect.
The Portland Yoga Project does not tolerate harassment, discrimination, bullying, retaliation, violations of consent or personal boundaries, or other conduct that undermines the safety, dignity, or belonging of others. This includes discrimination based on any protected characteristic under applicable law.
If concerns arise, participants are encouraged to speak with any facilitator or member of studio leadership so they can be addressed with care, respect, and appropriate follow-up.
Caring for Yourself & Others
Yoga, movement practices, meditation, and breathwork involve physical and emotional exploration. We encourage participants to honor their own bodies, practice within their abilities, communicate injuries or limitations when appropriate, and care for their wellbeing throughout the program.
The Portland Yoga Project strives to create an inclusive learning environment. Participants who may benefit from accommodations are encouraged to reach out before or during the program so we can discuss ways to support their participation whenever reasonably possible.
Training Materials & Photography
Training manuals, curriculum, presentations, recordings, and other educational materials are provided for participants' personal educational use and remain the intellectual property of The Portland Yoga Project. Materials may not be copied, distributed, recorded, or reproduced without written permission.
Photographs and video may occasionally be taken during Teacher Training for educational or promotional purposes. Participants who prefer not to appear in photographs or recordings are welcome to let us know before the program begins.
Supporting Our Learning Community
Our goal is always to support every participant's success and create an environment where everyone can learn and grow together.
In rare situations, The Portland Yoga Project may determine that continued participation is not in the best interest of an individual or the learning community. This may include conduct that compromises the safety, wellbeing, or educational integrity of the program or violates our Studio Policies. In these cases, participants may be asked to leave the program. Refunds are not available when a participant is dismissed due to policy violations.
Please Note: This page provides a general overview of our Teacher Training expectations. All enrolled participants will receive the complete Teacher Training Enrollment Agreement, which outlines the full terms, policies, and participation requirements for the program.
