Friday, September 5 from 5:30pm-6:45pm
with Heather Zimmerman of ACLU of Maine and Victoria Rutledge at PYP DOWNTOWN
As we continue to navigate these unprecedented times, PYP is dedicated to creating spaces and events where you can come together in community to learn about the challenges ahead and ways that we can defend our democracy and rights. Join Heather Zimmerman of the ACLU of Maine and Victoria Rutledge for an evening of Know Your Rights information, discussion, and gentle movement.
We will focus on federal immigration operations and how the current administration is using our state to facilitate its mass deportation agenda. We will discuss (1) the differences between federal immigration agencies like Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and state and local police; (2) our rights when interacting with federal immigration enforcement; and (3) how we can share information with other people about their legal rights. We will also practice how to respond when interacting with law enforcement officers ourselves and as bystanders. This session will be bookended by gentle movements and body scans to keep us firmly rooted in our bodies even when the world’s woes are escalating.
