Wabanaki describes the place the first light of a new dawn first touches Turtle Island.
— Maria Girouard of Penobscot Nation

The Portland Yoga Project operates on the unceded territories of the Wabanaki. The Wabanaki people lived on the land of what is now partially known as Maine for thousands of years before being nearly wiped out by the genocide and disease that came with european settler-colonialism. Wabanaki people are still here. they deserve equal rights, justice, representation and sovereignty and are owed reparations. We are grateful to live and work on the land that was stewarded by the Wabanaki for generations. We are grateful to live in proximity to wabanaki culture, art and traditions. please support the work and well-being of our wabanaki neighbors through maine-wabanaki reach.
