YOUR MOVEMENT PRACTICE & YOUR PELVIC FLOOR

A YOGA & BARRE CLASS FOR WOMEN

WITH Jenn Gelfand, PT, DPT, RYT

Saturday | October 12th | 12:30pm-2pm | $20

During your exercise classes, do you hear your instructor say “engage your pelvic floor” and ask yourself.. what does that mean? How exactly do I do that? Do you wonder, “what is the pelvic floor” and why does it matter? Are you looking to discover a deeper awareness and understanding of your deep core and pelvic floor and learn how to bring this intention into the movement practices you love? Have you experienced urinary leaking or urgency and been told to “just do your kegels” but you don’t know where to start or if “kegels” are truly the solution to your symptoms? Maybe you are pregnant or postpartum and curious about how to participate in your exercise classes while optimizing your pelvic floor health?

This class is hosted by Jenn Gelfand, PT, DPT, RYT, a physical therapist, registered yoga instructor, barre instructor, and owner of Root To Rise Physical Therapy & Pelvic Health. She specializes in pelvic floor rehabilitation and women’s health. Jenn is passionate about educating and empowering women to optimize their pelvic health through fostering greater awareness and intention. She appreciates how connection to our deep core and pelvic floor enhances our movement practices AND how incorporating yoga and barre into our regular routine can lead to greater overall pelvic floor health and function in our daily lives.

In this class, you will learn basic anatomy and function of the deep core and pelvic floor, why your BREATH matters, common symptoms of pelvic floor dysfunction, and when you should seek guidance from a healthcare professional. Jenn will guide you through a gentle yoga and barre practice to help you apply these principles to movement. This workshop is for women only and appropriate for all levels. No previous yoga or barre experience is necessary. If you are pregnant, please obtain clearance to participate in general exercise by your healthcare provider prior to the class.

DARK MOON: A RESTORATIVE SOUND BATH

WITH GHOST PIPES & CHRISTINA SPENCER

Saturday | November 23rd | 5:00pm-7:00pm | $30

The Portland Yoga Project welcomes the experimental ambient duo Ghost Pipes with PYP’s own Christina Spencer as they take you on a restorative ambient sound bath journey for the senses and soul. As the days get shorter and winter begins to wrap itself around Portland, we are all called to come deeply into our bodies and embrace a practice of warmth and comfort. You are invited to join Ghost Pipes and Christina down this path of vibrational restoration.

Ghost Pipes (Jeff Griecci & Lars Rynning) will curate the auditory landscape: a rich, deep atmosphere of drones layered with bells, singing bowls, the mbira, the clarinet and many other delightful surprises. As you lay in repose, you’ll be awash in wave after wave of a deep ambient ocean of sound. This full body experience doesn’t end there. Christina will lead a restorative practice that is carefully connected to and influenced by Ghost Pipes’s transportive music. You’ll relax into a series of long-held poses completely supported by props to facilitate healing and restoration of the body and mind. Christina will also provide gentle assists using different essential oils selected for each pose.

Comfy socks and eye pillows are encouraged. We can’t wait to float through this magical evening with you!

Tension for Extension Ecstasy

Saturday | December 7th | 1:00pm-3:30pm | $45 or $50 day-of

Do you have pain in your lower back and sacrum when you backbend? Do you have a stiff upper back that just won’t allow for a wide “open” chest in cobra? Or on the flip side, do you suffer from not understanding how to “draw your front ribs in”? Come discover and dive deeper into the power of your CLA: central longitudinal axis, your core canister, and how to use tensegrity to create more space in between your upper body (rib area) and lower body (pelvic bowl) for more easeful & spacious backbending. Learn how to use the space to create more mobility within the bones of your spine, and stability within your trunk and hips for safer, more efficient backbending.

Tensegrity in Flight:

Sunday | December 8th | 1:00pm-3:30pm | $45 or $50 day of

This workshop is all about building strength, stability, and support in the shoulder girdle to prep for the heavier load bearing demands that arm balances and inversions ask of the body. The workshop will culminate in an exploration of several inversions and arm balances with some supported and accessible variations that highlight lightness, movement efficiency and ease. We will dive deep into the mechanics of the shoulders and upper body. We will mobilize and strengthen the shoulder girdle, harness a supple and strong core, move around our central longitudinal axis, neutralize and balance our hips and shoulders, create length and spinal space, and explore it all from a different perspective!

WEEKEND WITH NAT KENDALL

Bhakti: Art of Devotion

Saturday | February 29th | 1:00pm-3:30pm | $45 or $50 day-of

Is there more to it than just stumbling along in our human ways? Is there something beyond what we see, taste, touch and hear? A bigger Love than our daily dramas? Explore the rich practice of Bhakti yoga, diving into an ocean of mercy to feel into a concept known as Isvarapranidhana (surrender). We'll open up dialog around what 'devotion' is and how it can become a powerful guide in our practice, and our daily life.

This workshop will involve group discussion, chanting, storytelling and a vinyasa practice as we inquire within; exploring what is beyond just merely form and opening the heart to something deeper – the biggest Love that resides in each and every single one of us.

*Please bring a notebook, pen, mat and be ready for a transformative practice.

Kleshas: Break on Through

Sunday | March 1st | 1:00pm-3:30pm | $45 or $50 day-of

What holds you back from being your fullest, most alive self? What keeps you from staying connected with your center and opening up in all areas of your life? In this workshop we’ll look at the five Kleshas from Patanjali’s ‘Yoga Sutra’ to identify the obstacles and blockages that can cloud our potential for awakening to life’s fullest experience.

Through group discussion, mantra, partner work and an embodied vinyasa we’ll dive into these areas of stuck energy and find ways to shift how we perceive the ‘obstacles’ on our own, unique path -- using them as instruments of change on our great journey home.

*Please bring a notebook, pen, mat and be ready for a transformative practice.
