FINDING THE BALANCE FOR HAPPY HIPS

WITH KATE HEFFERNAN

Sunday | January 13th | 1:00pm-3:00pm | $45

In order for our yoga practice to have integrity, there is always a balance. A balance between effort and ease, strength and flexibility. Hip stability is one of the keys to longevity in any movement practice. This workshop will breakdown all the directions the hip is capable of moving. Through practice every major muscles of the hip will be strengthened and then given plenty of time to unravel from that work to lengthen.

Kate is a Vinyasa Flow and Restorative Yoga Teacher in the Boston area and has been teaching since 2010. She is known for her ability to weave together intelligent and well-crafted sequences built around a specific theme. In Kate’s classes, you can expect precise instructions to create dynamic postures that will work together to not only bring more strength and suppleness to the body, but also to bring the body, mind, and spirit into the present moment. This specificity not only creates a challenging physical practice, it also offers each student a profound opportunity to practice skillfulness in action. Kate encourages her students to make choices based on their given circumstances, whether that means finding their edge of effort or taking an extra long Savasana. This mindfulness is the essence of the practice of Yoga, one that serves us all whether we are on the mat or off.

GENTLE IS THE NEW ADVANCED and

MAKING VINYASA YOGA SAFE

WITH J. BROWN

J. Brown is a yoga teacher, writer, and podcaster. He is at the forefront of a quiet yoga revolution, based in healing, that seeks to change the dialogue and direction of yoga practice in the west. His writing has been featured in Yoga Therapy Today, the International Journal of Yoga Therapy, and across the yoga blogosphere. His podcast is internationally renowned for raising the level of conversation.

Gentle is the New Advanced

Saturday | February 23rd | 1:00pm - 3:30pm | $45 or $50 day-of

Imagine yoga before it was transformed in its journey to the West. Imagine a personalized, breath-centered practice, passed down from individual teacher to student. A Yoga for the well being of the whole person; something that would provide a vehicle for learning to truly take care of ourselves and ease the pains of life.

Yoga changed when it came to the West. New styles and brands of yoga have developed which meet the desires and expectations of the western audience. Focusing on the outer, physical achievements, and perhaps losing something in the creation of a standardized, scaled and franchised approach to yoga. But the older traditions have also continued, and J. Brown is at the forefront of a wonderful resurgence of this ‘old-school’ yoga.

This is J’s signature offering that he has given to thousands of teachers and students around the world. At once both a revolution and a return to the ancient roots of yoga. In this gentle, therapeutic, breath-centered approach, we are making the body strong and flexible — but we go about it in a way that also encourages useful patterns of thought and behavior.

THE BANDED BASICS and RAVELING AND UNRAVELING YOUR HIPS & TWISTS

WITH GIULIA PLINE

Tensegrity refers to the expansive space we create in our own bodies to optimize movement, joint and muscle health. Tensegrity creates ease and light in yoga asana and in life.  Expanding in all directions during movement is how we achieve tensegrity.

Using therabands in a variety of yoga postures and corrective exercises, you will learn how to achieve maximum tensegrity, expansion, and stability through mobility.

Therabands provide excellent tactile external feedback and resistance for the body and muscles to push and pull against, which sends valuable learning signals to the brain to grow from. The bands give us boundaries and help us to strengthen in our end ranges. We activate more passive tissues and connect the dots of our own web. The therabands mimic what is happening inside the body: the interrelationships between the bones that float inside the soft tissue and are held by the muscles and fascia.

In these workshops, you will learn how to use and move your body differently and more efficiently IMMEDIATELY.

  • Each class will start with a brief explanation of the concepts we will explore through practice.  We will start slow, and build upon a foundation of optimal movement patterns and awareness.

  • Expect to wear therabands for all poses in the movement sequences and connect with your body somatically to harness control of your movements and learn about your limits.

  • We will use the bands as accommodating lines of resistance against which to generate force for creating tensile strength and stability with mobility.

The Banded Basics

Saturday | March 30th | 1:00pm - 3:30pm | $45 or $50 day-of

Learn the basics of controlled mobility. How to control your end range, create stability in all poses and movements, and develop tension within your body using your own deep stability system.  There will be isolated core work, exploration and execution of “basic” yoga postures that are practiced in almost every vinyasa or hatha style yoga class (ex. tadasana, down dog, plank), and emphasis on stacking the body/bones for optimal function and efficiency in movement and breathing. Using the therabands as props for our poses, we will shed awareness and light to the areas in which we are underworking or disconnected to using the reference point of the bands for our own tensegrity.

Raveling and Unraveling Your Hips & Twists

Sunday | March 31st | 1:00pm - 3:30pm | $45 or $50 day-of

Many of us have or may experience lower back, sacral, or hip joint pain during the course of our lives or in and with our movement practices. In the yoga practice with all of our forward bending, lunging, twisting, and “hip opening”, the risk of something running awry with how we are practicing and causing pain in these areas is quite common. This class will help you understand how to find YOUR neutral pelvis and femur (or thigh bone) centered within its socket and how to strengthen the areas around the hip joint to create more stability with mobility around the pelvis. We will dive into discussions of allowing the pelvis to twist or not in twisting postures, and the benefits of both. Using the bands, we will access our super-important hip joint rotator cuff, core twisting muscles, and powerful glutes. These concepts allow optimal stability and control through the vast ranges of motion that can occur within the hip and pelvis.
