WITH Sarah Perle

Sunday | March 24th | 12:30pm-2:30pm | $35 or $40 day of

Are you curious about meditation?  Or have you wanted to learn more?

Through meditation practice, we can lessen stress and tension in our lives while exploring our inner world and cultivating calm. We need to exercise our minds to promote wellness, ease, and happiness in the same way that we need to exercise our physical bodies for health and wellness.

In this workshop, we’ll practice a few short meditations (5-10 minutes) and you will be taught about various approaches to meditation.  A foundation will be be established so that you can explore what works best for you.

Tensegrity refers to the expansive space we create in our own bodies to optimize movement, joint and muscle health. Tensegrity creates ease and light in yoga asana and in life.  Expanding in all directions during movement is how we achieve tensegrity.

Using therabands in a variety of yoga postures and corrective exercises, you will learn how to achieve maximum tensegrity, expansion, and stability through mobility.

Therabands provide excellent tactile external feedback and resistance for the body and muscles to push and pull against, which sends valuable learning signals to the brain to grow from. The bands give us boundaries and help us to strengthen in our end ranges. We activate more passive tissues and connect the dots of our own web. The therabands mimic what is happening inside the body: the interrelationships between the bones that float inside the soft tissue and are held by the muscles and fascia.

In these workshops, you will learn how to use and move your body differently and more efficiently IMMEDIATELY.

  • Each class will start with a brief explanation of the concepts we will explore through practice.  We will start slow, and build upon a foundation of optimal movement patterns and awareness.

  • Expect to wear therabands for all poses in the movement sequences and connect with your body somatically to harness control of your movements and learn about your limits.

  • We will use the bands as accommodating lines of resistance against which to generate force for creating tensile strength and stability with mobility.

The Banded Basics

Saturday | March 30th | 1:00pm - 3:30pm | $45 or $50 day-of

Learn the basics of controlled mobility. How to control your end range, create stability in all poses and movements, and develop tension within your body using your own deep stability system.  There will be isolated core work, exploration and execution of “basic” yoga postures that are practiced in almost every vinyasa or hatha style yoga class (ex. tadasana, down dog, plank), and emphasis on stacking the body/bones for optimal function and efficiency in movement and breathing. Using the therabands as props for our poses, we will shed awareness and light to the areas in which we are underworking or disconnected to using the reference point of the bands for our own tensegrity.

Raveling and Unraveling Your Hips & Twists

Sunday | March 31st | 1:00pm - 3:30pm | $45 or $50 day-of

Many of us have or may experience lower back, sacral, or hip joint pain during the course of our lives or in and with our movement practices. In the yoga practice with all of our forward bending, lunging, twisting, and “hip opening”, the risk of something running awry with how we are practicing and causing pain in these areas is quite common. This class will help you understand how to find YOUR neutral pelvis and femur (or thigh bone) centered within its socket and how to strengthen the areas around the hip joint to create more stability with mobility around the pelvis. We will dive into discussions of allowing the pelvis to twist or not in twisting postures, and the benefits of both. Using the bands, we will access our super-important hip joint rotator cuff, core twisting muscles, and powerful glutes. These concepts allow optimal stability and control through the vast ranges of motion that can occur within the hip and pelvis.

Birth is an active process.  Learn to work with your body using breath and movement

This two and half hour workshop is designed for birthing people and their partners.  Class will begin with movement followed by an interactive review of the stages and phases of labor.  We will explore the relationship between tension and pain and you will leave with practical methods of support including yoga-based breathwork, movement, touch, and relaxation techniques that both you and your birth partner can use to support the challenges of each stage. The beauty of this workshop and these techniques is that they can be used in any type of birth setting: with or without medication, in the hospital or at home.

This class picks up where many talk-based birthing classes leave off: you will leave with practical tools that you can practice at home to help you cope with the physicality of the birth process. Partners in Birth can be taken as a standalone childbirth-ed class, a review for second-timers or as a supplement to more comprehensive childbirth courses.

PARTNERS IN BIRTH is taught by Jaclyn Gallo, owner of The Wrens Nest. Jaclyn has worked with birthing families since 2010 as a doula, childbirth educator, and pre and post natal yoga teacher and specializes in helping individuals prepare for birth and postpartum.

Wednesday | May 8th | 6:45pm-8:15pm | FREE

Join us on May 8th, 6:45-8:15pm at The Portland Yoga Project to find out what this Kundalini Yoga is all about! We will spend an hour and a half together, chanting, breathing, moving, meditating, and relaxing to the healing vibrations of the Gong. No experience necessary, beginners welcome!

What is Kundalini Yoga?
Kundalini Yoga helps to develop flexibility, tone muscles and strengthen the nervous, glandular, and immune systems. It helps to increase mental energy and give you a deep inner calm, strength, and grace. This ancient system draws upon a vast body of teachings brought to the U.S. by Yogi Bhajan. Each class includes all elements of the ancient teachings of yoga: Asana (postures), Pranayama (breathing techniques), Mantra (sound), Mudra (hand positions), and Meditation. These aspects are combined into series of exercises called Kriyas. Some Kriyas are dynamic and energetic, others are slow and meditative.
About Satpal:Satpal Kaur (Sonya Theriault, LCSW), certified Kundalini Yoga Instructor by KRI (2005), has been practising yoga for more than 20 years. She discovered Kundalini Yoga at a small studio in Kalispell, MT in 2004 and immediately fell in love with its powerful ability to facilitate transformation. She is the mother of two beautiful beings, a therapist, and energy work practitioner. Sonya works hard to maintain a daily yoga practice and encourages her students to do the same. Through daily practice, we can meet whatever life has to offer in the moment with grace, flexibility, and awareness. Sonya also has training in trauma sensitivity and body positive yoga.

WITH Emilie Chatelain & MEA TAVARES

Sunday | May 19th | 1:00pm - 3:30pm | $45

What callings live within you that are asking to be expressed? What did you believe was possible when you were connected to your childhood knowing? And how do we find our way back there? To remember the place in us where we believed in our own power, our own creativity, and our own light, is a vulnerable journey of infinite possibility. The way home to this wise center asks us to release all of the ways we have defined what is possible, and to enter into the alive flow of limitless creation. Join your guides, Emilie Chatelain (RYT 200, Shinpiden/Reiki III) and Mea Starr Tavares (RYT 200, Shipiden/Reiki III) for an exploration of your creative force, your Yes, and your Light.

Through somatic awareness practices and the journey of yoga nidra we will explore our growth edges in creative expression and transcend their limitations, reconnecting with the guidance and power of our inner children. We will then move that wisdom into being through creative expression and personal reflection, ending the evening with the ritual of Reiju, a spiritual blessing of personal illumination in traditional Japanese Reiki. We can create anything that is asking for our love - the challenge only is to release all of the perceived limitations of our Light.

Saturday | June 1st | 1:00pm - 2:30pm | $30

Thawing out doesn't always come easy — Spring can begin as a slow process to rise up again from the ground, from within a tree, from under our wool blankets. Yoga helps us navigate this transition, brings balance & can point us in our own unique direction.

In this workshop we'll keep it slow, simple & intentional —  with yin yoga asana, mudra & meditation we'll target the fascia, joints & liver-gallbladder network of the body while supporting our aspirations for the season ahead.

Friday | June 14th | 7:00pm - 8:00pm | $30

Stress and emotions like grief, anger and guilt can be so difficult to express that many people suppress, deny, and ignore them, wasting energy and compromising the flow of prana (life force energy), perhaps setting themselves on a path of emotional imbalance, stress and disease. Yoga Nidra offers an opportunity to acknowledge, accept, and release those emotions. Yoga Nidra is a deep, guided meditation and visualization that opens your heart to call in your deepest desires and release what no longer serves you. Yoga Nidra means "sleep with trace awareness". You will be invited to go inward for deep rest and deep nourishment. Yoga Nidra offers you a pathway to physical, mental, and emotional relaxation and wellness. Show yourself some love and care, while going inward, receiving the healing benefits of rest and finding emotional balance. Allow yourself to feel your body, mind and spirit, while holding yourself lovingly.  This class will begin with some gentle movement and pranayama (breathing techniques) to prepare for Yoga Nidra. No experience needed. Everyone is welcome.
